History[]

Entering EdA service at the end of 1960, C.4K-169 is known to have been flown by 471 Escuadron, until it was struck off charge in 1965,[3] before becoming one of the aircraft acquired by Spitfire Productions, for use in the film Battle of Britain, gaining UK registry G-AWHT.[2]

After filming, the aircraft was shipped to the United States, and registered to the Confederate (now Commerative) Air Force as N9939, and displayed regularly until Don Whittington flew too low at CAF Airsho 76, resulting in the prop catching the ground and the aircraft sliding onto the grass. Sold to Harold Kindsvater in 1988 and rebuilt, the aircraft flew again as N109W on 4 October 2000.

Acquired by the Air Training Academy at Heringsdort in 2009, the aircraft suffered a taxiing accident in 2013, which damaged the engine and propeller.[3] This prompted conversion into a Bf 109G-12 two seat trainer, complete with DB605 engine in place of the Rolls Royce Merlin, by MeierMotors at their hanger in Bremgarten.[4] Now registered D-FMGZ, this aircraft was re-flown in August 2016,[3] and has since been re-fitted with a Merlin engine unit.[5]

  1. Messerschmitt Bf 109 aircraft, which were licence built by Spanish Hispano Aviaçion in the 40’ and 50’s, using Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
  2. At one point during it's CAF ownership, the aircraft was photographed weafring it's US Serial, and the Yellow 11 markings originally worn by C.4K-75[3]
