The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter used by Allied forces, primarily the Royal Air Force, throughout World War II. Built from 1938 to 1948, it featured a single three, four or five-bladed propeller engine and its distinctive elliptical wing planform, remaining in service with the Irish Air Corps until 1961. As well as a fighter aircraft it was used in various roles after the War.
